EVs smash sales records across Australia in June!
May 2026 saw electric vehicles hit a record 20% share of the new-car market. Then June happened. Total new-vehicle sales across Australia hit 140,000 for the month — the highest monthly total ever recorded — with battery electric vehicles making up 23%.
EV market share has now nearly tripled since January, climbing from 8.4% to 23.4% in just six months. Tesla had its best month in Australian history, delivering 8,670 vehicles, and making the Model Y the highest-selling vehicle in Australia for the month.

With more EVs hitting Australian roads than ever, this means more people shopping for EV insurance for the first time. If that’s you, here are a few useful starting points from insurers and motoring bodies:
- NRMA Insurance — Car insurance for your electric vehicle
- RACV — EV insurance in Australia
- Allianz — EV Insurance Hub covering chargers and battery damage
- Zurich’s InsureMyTesla — Teslas only
As always, get a few quotes from different insurers (not just different brands) as premiums vary wildly.
If you already own an EV, be sure to get multiple quotes when you renew because the “loyalty tax” is definitely a thing and you can usually save by shopping around every year.
